ICYMI: Rep. McBride, Sens. Coons, Blunt Rochester and Delawareans Raise Alarm on Devastating Cuts to Food Assistance

July 15, 2025

NEWARK, DE — In case you missed it, Delaware’s Senators Chris Coons and Lisa Blunt Rochester, Congresswoman Sarah McBride, SNAP recipients, and Delaware’s frontline food leaders hosted a press conference in Newark to highlight impending cuts to food assistance across the state.

With the passage of the “Big Beautiful Bill” (H.R. 1), Congressional Republicans have codified cuts to critical nutrition assistance, specifically SNAP, which will have wide-reaching impacts through the First State. McBride and her colleagues stood alongside Delawareans who will be most impacted by these cuts to speak clearly about the threat of this legislation.

Coastal Point, Congressional delegation, local leaders sound alarm on cuts to food assistance, 7/11/26

[...] “This budget is trickle-down cruelty — plain and simple,” said McBride. “It guts food assistance for tens of thousands of Delawareans, rips school meals away from kids, and buries families and schools in red tape. At a time when families are already stretched thin, this plan would force them to do more with less — all so billionaires can get a tax break. Delawareans deserve better, and I’ll keep fighting alongside Sens. Coons and Blunt Rochester to protect the basic dignity of a full fridge and a fair shot.” [...]

Delaware News Journal, Delaware’s federal representatives come out against Trump-backed food stamp cuts, Shane Brennan, 7/12/2025

[...] “McBride spoke about the cuts to the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program, which created cooperative agreements to provide funding for state governments to purchase foods produced within the state or region to help support local, and regional producers, according to the U.S Department of Agriculture.

“She said the ‘win-win’ program in Delaware was vital to supporting small farms in places with limited access to nutritious food.

"‘They dismantled the infrastructure that helps fuel our economy and feed our communities,’ McBride said at the press conference ‘This is a betrayal. This budget portrays our values as Americans, and it portrays our values as state leaders.’" [...]

[...] “McBride brought Newark resident Elizabeth Morales and her daughter with her. Morales said SNAP benefits gave her a way to get back on her feet despite being laid off in 2023. She called the cuts "theft," and dispelled the notion that SNAP benefits are a "handout."

"It doesn't discourage people from working, whether they're working, looking for work, or just trying to get through a hard season," she said. "It helps people stay afloat."

Delaware Public Media, Delaware's federal delegation addresses SNAP cuts under Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill”, Sarah Petrowich,

[...] “Several of these program changes are coming after the 2026 midterm election, leaving some Democrats hopeful that their party can gain enough seats in Congress to reverse some, if not all of the cuts.

“‘We're going to continue to fight. We're going to continue to fight back against Republican efforts to worsen these cuts, and we're going to continue to fight to restore this funding, which might not happen this year or next year, but we will not stop working until we have the votes and the power necessary to guarantee that every single person here in Delaware and across the country can get the healthcare that they need and put food on the table,’ Congresswoman McBride said.” [...]
