Rep. McBride Warns GOP Budget Would “Devastate Delaware Families” in News Journal Op-Ed

July 8, 2025

WILMINGTON, DE — Delaware’s Congresswoman Sarah McBride penned an op-ed in the Delaware News Journal warning that the Republican budget passed by the House of Representatives would dismantle critical services that tens of thousands of Delawareans rely on.

In the op-ed, titled “This is the agony the Republican budget hurls at Delaware,” McBride details how the legislation would gut Medicaid, eliminate food assistance for thousands of Delaware households, and put rural hospitals at risk of closure—all to help finance tax breaks for billionaires.

“Budgets are moral documents,” writes Rep. McBride. “I believe budgets should reflect our values: dignity, fairness, opportunity. Every child should have a doctor. Every senior should age with support. Every family should be able to count on support and care in their time of need. Every dollar we spend is a reflection of those values. But this budget betrays those values. This budget tells Delawareans: ‘You're on your own.’”

McBride’s op-ed outlines the stakes for Delaware, including:

  • 54,000 Delawareans at risk of losing health coverage due to Medicaid cuts
  • 37,000 Delawareans are at risk of losing some or all of their SNAP benefits
  • At least one rural hospital faces very real existential risk
  • A $3.3 trillion increase in the national deficit to fund tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans

McBride also highlights how the bill would impose red tape and new bureaucratic hurdles in Medicaid and Medicare, making it harder for patients to get the care they need.

“I reject that vision,” McBride closes. “Delawareans have always rejected that vision. Our job is to make life easier, not harder for the people we represent. Delaware families work hard. They play by the rules. They expect their elected leaders to do the same. That’s why I’ll continue working — alongside our senators, our governor, and our General Assembly — to protect Delaware from the damage in this budget and to offer better alternatives, rooted in stability, dignity, and opportunity for every person in our state.”
